Master of the Roll…ing in the aisles

Good egg, the Master of the Rolls. In fact, the legal profession excelled itself at a reception at the new Manchester Civil Justice Centre last night… (Just a few pages before me in the visitors book is the Queen!!!!!).Mr Justice Brendan Heggarty set the tone by recalling the debate over Britain’s second city…London!!! sir anthony clarkeThen Sir Anthony Clarke, the Master of the Rolls, recalled a previous visit to address the Manchester Law Society. Ushered away from a dark figure by his hosts on the way from Chinatown to his hotel, he was advised that he had been about to be offered crack cocaine…“I’ll catch him next time,” quipped Sir Anthony.  Ps…The building itself – a veritable “Palais de Justice”, according to Tone – is truly amazing with 47 courtrooms. On the tenth floor, you can hear the wind whistling past the windows! But, with respect to Tone and Brendan, it does put you in mind of this: “The one great principle of the English law is to make business for itself.” An honourable mention to the first person who can say where that quote is from…. Pps… No applause for Northern Rail, the manager of Victoria Station. The gents were shut at at 8.55 pm….5 minutes early…..but the ladies, who normally get preferential treatment, were faced with locked doors at the same time….and the notice on the door said they closed 22.45!!!!!
