Lake District

Forced home by the rain YET AGAIN!!!

After the Pikes, it rained so we had a rest day, the climax of which was afternoon tea at Low Sizergh, a farm which has become a goldmine by inviting the public in.

The tea room overlooks the milking shed and eventually, we managed to get a table by the window which overlooks the byre.

There are nine stalls on opposite sides of the sheds and the cows come in one end and leave at the other after milking. It’s quite a magical experience, even when done mechanically. The cows behave impeccably and feed while two staff - one of them my first ever real life milkmaid - attach the pipes to their udders.

Once they have given their milk, the feeders shut off, the gate at the end opens, and they file out to make way for the next batch.

After tea and scones, I pop downstairs and poke my head into the barn. The milkmaid smiles but the smell of cow is overpowering and I can’t stop to chat!
